History

At the centre of Dolwyddelan is Elen’s Castle Hotel, named after the daughter of Llywelyn the Great who was born at Dolwyddelan Castle on the outskirts of the village. Dating back to the early 18th Century, Elen’s Castle Hotel was originally part of the Earl of Ancaster’s Welsh estate. It was rented out for £2.12s.6d per year in 1874! In later years it became a village beer house and coaching inn. Today it still retains much of this original historic character as a very comfortable, privately-run family hotel.

Elen’s Well (Ffynnon Elen) is a small rectangular basin 9-foot by 7 foot with walls of earth-mortared rubble and a drinking trough. The water is reputed to have healing properties and is said to steam in frosty weather. The well can be reached by a path alongside the Hotel and, thanks to a National Lottery Heritage grant and Dolwyddelan Historical Society, was recently preserved.
